About Isopropyl β-d-1-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG)
IPTG is an allolactose mimic that can cause the transcription process of the lactose operon, and therefore can induce the expression of proteins corresponding to genes downstream of the lactose operon.
IPTG is often used in cloning experiments that require the induction of β-galactosidase activity. It is often used in combination with X-Gal or Bluo-Gal for blue-and-white screening of recombinant bacterial colonies that can induce expression of the lac operon in E. coli. IPTG binds to the lacI repressor protein and changes its conformation to prevent the inhibition of the β-galactosidase encoding gene lacZ.
