About Lepirudin
Lepirudin is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as direct thrombin inhibitors. Thrombin is an enzyme involved in the blood clotting process, and lepirudin works by directly inhibiting the activity of thrombin.
Lepirudin was initially derived from the saliva of the medicinal leech (Hirudo medicinalis) and was the first direct thrombin inhibitor approved for clinical use. It is primarily used as an anticoagulant (blood thinner) for the prevention and treatment of blood clots in certain medical conditions.
One of the main indications for lepirudin is the prevention and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). HIT is an immune-mediated condition characterized by a decrease in platelet count and an increased risk of blood clot formation due to an adverse reaction to heparin, another commonly used anticoagulant.
Lepirudin can also be used during specific medical procedures, such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or angioplasty, in patients who have HIT or are at high risk of developing HIT. It helps prevent clot formation in the coronary arteries during these procedures.
